The medium weight plain canvas weave is very evident in x-ray, as are the stretcher bars from the reverse. The lack of cusping in the canvas at the right-hand and bottom edges suggests that the canvas has been reduced in size. The image taken in ultra violet light on the right shows the extensive dark areas of retouching in the background; the areas that fluoresce a bright pinky orange in this image suggest that a madder based pigment is present.
