The medium weight, plain canvas weave is evident in the x-ray image in the centre. There is cusping at all the edges, which shows that the canvas has not been trimmed significantly, even though the original tacking edges are no longer present. The paint layers have been applied very thinly, even in the face. A diagonal scratch running through the eyebrow on the left has been retouched and is clearly visible in the image taken in ultra violet light on the right. The background has been partially cleaned and residues of old varnish fluoresce green.
