Jacques Antoine Dassier

Jacques Antoine Dassier, the son of medallist Jean Dassier was born in Geneva. After early instruction from his father, he went to Paris in around 1732 to train under the goldsmith Thomas Germain. Following a period assisting his father he moved in 1740 to London where he was employed at the Royal Mint. In the same year he published proposals for cutting medals comprising the portraits of eminent Englishmen, with a subscription of four guineas for thirteen medals. Among the first of those to be represented were Alexander Pope, the mathematician Abraham de Moivre and was the numismatist and antiquary Martin Folkes.
